CSEM Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology, Inc. is a privately held company carrying out applied research work, product development and production of special devices. CSEM is principally active in the fields of microtechnology, microelectronics and systems engineering. By offering its high-tech know-how, competencies and expertise, CSEM fulfils the needs of industry. It also develops its own commercial activities, either with existing industrial partners or through the creation of spin-off and start-up companies. In particular, CSEM supplies customized microsystems, micro-electronic designs and subsystem solutions, as well as specialized coatings and materials.

CSEM operates from its headquarters in Neuchâtel and also runs a micro-optics research facility in Zurich and newly a microrobotics research facility in Alpnach (Central Switzerland). Presently the company has a staff of 350 employees, over half of which hold an academic degree. In 1999, CSEM realized a total income of CHF 65 Mio. The biggest customer is the Swiss government, which contributes for about 30 % of the total income. 70% come from industry projects. The new microrobotics research centre is currently composed of 16 researchers and has been set up by CSEM in regards to the increasing needs for assembling micro- and nanosystems and for the fabrication of biotechnological devices.
